Pehchaan · Apparel
The name means "pen-craft." It comes from Andhra Pradesh and has two protected regional (GI) styles. Srikalahasti: painted freehand with a pen, showing scenes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and Hindu gods. Machilipatnam: block-printed with vegetable dyes, with Persian-influenced motifs like vines, peacocks and the tree of life. The process can take up to 23 steps and uses natural dyes, with myrobalan and alum to set the colours. In the "Border Pallu" version, the Kalamkari work is probably only on the border and pallu, with a plainer body.
